Every day you make copies of student documents to send across campus to other departments. You feel terrible about killing so many trees each year. You want to stop, but you can’t! You are locked into the mantra of “we’ve always done it this way”. How can you stop??
According to www.conservatree.com, 1 ream of office paper (500 sheets) uses about 6% of a tree. One tree makes 16.67 reams of paper. How many reams of paper do you use in a year? Hundreds, right? That is a lot of trees. It doesn’t feel good when you calculate it all out.
You can stop making all those copies by sharing documents across campus electronically. When I was working in the admissions office at the University of Kansas, we made thousands of copies each year to send to the professional schools to review applicants. When we implemented ImageNow enterprise content management software, that all changed. Now the authorized staff in the professional schools can review a student’s file anytime, from anywhere without using a single copy of paper! What a difference that made. From the cost of the paper to the “green” feeling everyone in the office now has. Now they are making a difference in their carbon footprint and that feels good.
